Set up a millennial glass project at an old people’s day centre in Surrey before retirement when I started painting.
My background before that was in hairdressing and newspaper journalism.
I try to make my paintings thoughtful and current. During the Pandemic I have focused on the big issue of Climate Change and the tiny things in nature I had never thought about before Covid Lockdown.
Walking in Bushy Park, close to home, the changing seasons suddenly became more vivid and spectacular.
Have shown work in Artists Magazine exhibitions, Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham, and Richmond Arthouse studios. I have three paintings (shown above) selected by Mall Galleries London for the online exhibition “Figurative Art Now”.
Above paintings (from left to right) are ‘Seared Earth’ ‘Locked Down’ & ‘Earth Beneath My Feet’.
They are on display in the Mall Galleries online exhibition “Figurative Art Now” from July 20th to September 20th 2021.
Not currently a member of a local art group.

I am an ex newspaper journalist and stained glass maker. After teaching stained glass at evening classes in Richmond London I then did private teaching groups in Hampton and set up a millennium project at Milford, Surrey, starting and equipping a glass workshop at a day centre.
I am a self taught painter and my love of colour and some of my abstract designs come from my passion for stained glass. I have a studio in Hampton and work mainly in acrylic and use my own linocuts to add detail to some images.

Born in 1952, I come from a long line of artists and can trace my ancestry back to Richard Wilson, the well-known 18th century English “romantic” painter. I studied at the City of London Polytechnic and the Wimbledon School of Art before embarking on a career as freelance artist and illustrator.
In addition to book-jacket illustration, I have produced work for television, films and museums, and have painted murals for commercial companies, and more recently, as a Lecturer in Art and Design.
My first love, however, has always been landscape painting. Capturing the effects of lighting and atmosphere, enables me to turn simple objects into the magical, always with the intention to convey the very essence of the subject, rather than just merely state the obvious.
Work has been exhibited in various galleries in London and the South East.

Primarily, I am the pastor and teacher of a church in Woking, I have painted professionally for nearly 30 years, holding solo and joint exhibitions in the UK and across Europe. I regularly hold painting classes for students and I am often invited by various Art Societies to demonstrate, hold workshops and appraisals.
Recognition of my talent and ability date back to my early childhood, when Annigoni viewed my work and recommended to my parents that I should pursue my painting. At 12, I won a scholarship to junior art school.
Working in watercolour or oils, my choice of subject is wide-ranging and my faith inspires me. I paint what I see and feel – those things which exercise my mind and cause me to stop, look, think and imagine.

John began in the 1970’s by selling his paintings of local scenes from the railings of the Bayswater Road in London. Most of these early works are now scattered around the world, from the Americas to Japan. In the 1980’s he worked at a much larger scale as a scenic artist, painting huge canvases and backdrops for live theatre.
Since 1990, John has specialised in painting architectural subjects, in oils, watercolour and acrylics. His success has been built on a sense of enjoyment and light in all his pictures and a thorough understanding of his subjects and his technique.
The demand for his work today, means that most of his time is filled with commissions for paintings and illustrations.
His clients include: The Royal Bank of Scotland, The University of Cambridge, Historic Royal Palaces, Rolex Watch Co., Holmes Place, Land Securities, J Walter Thompson, McCann Erickson, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Berkeley Homes, Hammerson, Costain, Barratt, Building Design Partnership, Sheppard Robson, Chapman Taylor Partnership, Opera North and The Oxford University Press.
He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show and has recently completed a commission to produce the painting for the 2009 “Oxford Almanack” – an annual publication of the Oxford University Press. Previously commissioned artists include JMW Turner, John Piper, David Gentleman and Sir Hugh Casson.
John lives in Thames Ditton, Surrey with his family and works from his studio in Kingston Upon Thames. When he’s not painting, he likes playing blues guitar, and/or drinking beer in the sun.
Portraits of buildings, from private houses to modern office developments, can be commissioned in all sizes, from small watercolours to very large oil paintings. They can reflect pride in a new development, or affection for an old building.
The colours and design are inspirational, but the whole process is governed by a respect for the craft of painting. The finished paintings evoke the very specific atmosphere of each place, in the nature of a true portrait.
John Walsom wants his pictures to have a positive impact.
“I’ve always tried to paint pictures that people will want to look at for a long time, without getting bored. People are proud of their buildings. They love the way they look at certain times of day, in a certain season, and a reminder of that moment makes them happy. It’s all about capturing a moment in the life of a place.”
Wapping Group of Artists, Chelsea Art Society and an associate of the Royal Society of Marine Artists
