Born in what was the British Protectorate of Aden in South Yemen in 1955. The love of painting, drawing and the beauty of the written word has dominated my life. My professional career began in corporate design leading to exhibition and interior design, culminating in my own design practice in the early eighties.
The spiritual aspect of humanity is a strong influence in my life, and as a result I entered the Benedictine monastery of Quarr Abbey for several years, where I was introduced to bookbinding and the restoration of books. Since leaving monasticism I have continued to develop fine painting, calligraphy and bookbinding.
The love of blending colour and texture in painting, the use of line in drawing, the beauty of the written word in calligraphy and the three dimensional aspect of bookbinding, bring together elements that compliment each other well.
The majority of my work is through commissions, supported by solo and joint exhibitions.
These include Architectural, Garden, Botanical, Portraiture and General - The selection on this site gives an indication of the varied work of the artist. More can be seen on his two websites (see the links above).
Reference for my work is either from life, photographs or a combination of both, whichever the occasion demands. Often many commissions are gifts and therefore a surprise, or maybe circumstances do not permit, so working with the subject matter is not all ways possible. In such cases a selection of images of the same subject is always a great help.
I use various media; oils, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, inks and pencil (monochrome). I enjoy texture in my work wherever possible along with detail and tend to be traditional in my approach. Commissions for some clients have been strongly impressionist and or using vivid colour allowing freedom in colour and form.
Small prints of Farnham and bird prints for children are available from The Frame Centre in Downing Street, Farnham. A collection of Limited-Edition Orchid Prints is also available. Initially, please go to walshsands.com and then contact me.
I cover all the major disciplines and a range of subject matter. Apart from sessional teaching, I am more than happy to give workshops and demonstrations to groups and societies.

Hildegarde was born on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, Northern Cape Province, South Africa.
She studied Social Science at the University of the Orange Free State, but has always been passionately involved in painting. She came to the UK in the “Sixties”, is married with two children, and lives in Surrey where she teaches and paints in her Studio in Molesey.
Hildegarde is primarily a “Colourist”. Her work is much influenced by her roots and she brings warmth and vibrancy into her paintings where with gay abandon uses colour and paint in a way that has been described as, “delightfully sensual”. Whether tackling cluttered Still Lifes of everyday objects, or landscapes of Southern Africa and Europe, she delights in depicting the effects of light and dark. The “Impressionists” and “Scottish Colourists” have had a major influence on her work. Although mainly an oil painter, Hildegarde also uses watercolour and mixed media.
Of Painting as an activity, she says “No matter how demanding painting can sometimes be, it always fills me with a huge sense of satisfaction and joy. In painting I escape into a World of my own, where I can revel in creating images with colour, shape and form.”
Hildegarde has sold to clients world-wide. Her paintings are represented by Art Galleries in South Africa and London. Her work is regularly exhibited with the Chelsea Art Society, and has been represented at the Affordable Art, and Battersea Art Fairs . In September 2007 she was Guest Artist for “The Family Law in Partnership”, Bedford Chambers, Covent Garden, London, and exhibited in May 2008 hanging at the Royal British Artists Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. One of her works, “Daffodils” was recently auctioned at the Royal Academy on behalf of Marie Curie Cancer Research.
Hildegarde undertakes commissions for Still Lifes incorporating client’s colour schemes and precious possessions as well as painting private homes and gardens.
Hildegarde is a member of Molesey Art Society, Chelsea Art Society, Sunbury on Thames Art Society & Thames Valley Art Society and Weybridge Art Society.

David is largely self-taught and has developed his own recognisable style. He has reached a stage where his work is attracting attention at local exhibitions. He loves painting a wide variety of subjects using traditional methods, but particularly enjoys painting landscapes and buildings combined with a use of strong colour.
David now has his own website which has the full range of his art work, including a Surrey Scenes Collection, a set of Venice and Florence Paintings, and a Gallery of his other art. Most paintings are available as high quality, limited-edition Giclée prints.
David is a member of Woking Society of Art, Byfleet Art Group, The North Surrey Artists Group and Pirbright Art Group.
