The Passing of 2020

Poem By Miranda Fuller

This 2020, passing’s, been the most appalling year
Of illness, loss, confusion, loneliness and dreadful fear;
Of missed events, occasions, anniversaries unshared,
Of constant wonderings how friends and family have fared;

But superhuman efforts, too, of vigilance and care,
Of acts of loving kindness, acts of heroism rare.
And finally, in the darkness of this tunnel, we see light
And hopefulness ahead of us, instead of dread and fright.

So, let our poor, depleted Christmas still bring joy and cheer
Then bid this passing year goodbye, without a single tear!

History of the Cranleigh Art and Crafts Society

Cranleigh village is situated in the beautiful Surrey countryside halfway between Heathrow & Gatwick.

Over fifty years ago (1968), when the population was 3000 a small group of individuals, led by Joy Attwell (a well renouned potter in Cranleigh) decided to form a local art group and membership rapidly climbed to 400.

Cranleigh was then regarded as the largest village in England! Today the population of Cranleigh is 20,000 and so our Society continues to serve the local interest in Art and Crafts.

Activities organised by the Society

The Society organises two Exhibitions in the Village Hall each year of local art & crafts and exhibit over 300 items by our Members.

There are monthly demonstrations on a Saturday afternoon in which we invite a professional painter to demonstrate their skills with oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels and mixed media. These are well attended by our members and also provide an opportunity for members to meet and socialise and pick up hints and tips to improve their own art work.

Please have a look at our programme below for further details.

We also organise sketching days and plein air painting days in summer and a summer outing.

Membership of Cranleigh Art & Crafts Society

Now in its 53rd year the Society still continues to welcome and encourage those interested in art and crafts, whether experienced or absolute beginners.

To this end all members can exhibit at our Exhibitions, Craft Market, join Outings and informal indoor and outdoor Painting Days.

Art Demonstrations

We hold ten demonstrations each year introducing new artists and techniques as well as hosting returning artists.
Demonstrators booked for this year include Soraya French, Jake Winkle, Melanie Cambridge and Stephen Hawkins.

We are happy for visitors to join us at any of these demonstrations with a £3 donation.

Society Membership

Yearly membership is £23 single and £28 family.
From 1st July half year membership is £10 and £12.50 respectively, although please read below for the special waiver of these fees for the remainder of 2021.

ANNEMARIE NIJEBOER EXHIBITION IN WOKING SURREY

Barbers Gallery is delighted to host Annemarie Nijeboer in Exhibition from Monday 20th November to Saturday 2nd December, 2017

Born in Delft, the Netherlands, Annemarie Nijeboer’s painting career has been truly international including extended stays in Australia, Sudan, Venezuela, Morocco Argentina and Switzerland before moving to Surrey.

She is most recognised for her impressionistic oil paintings which began in the 1980’s in Buenos Aires. The light, colours and scenery of the varied Argentine landscape and the lively atmosphere of the leafy squares of Buenos Aires suited Annemarie’s impressionistic style, which led her to evolve colour combinations which have since become the hallmark of her work.

Her first solo exhibition in the historical Museo Peyrredon in Buenos Aires became an instant success with excellent reviews in the Argentinian national press:

“landscapes and characters treated with total chromatic delicacy and fine perception”
Clarin

“We can feel the light…the freshness of her shadows……spontaneity of everyday reality”
Ambito Financiero

“picturesqueness and….visual sensation “
La Nacion

In 2000 and 2012, Annemarie held two major sell out exhibitions of some 50 paintings in the Guildford House Gallery.

“…vigorously tackled impressionist oil paintings….capture a sense of the moment with a dramatic flurry of brush strokes, in which people or places emerge from dashes of bright, slanting light. ……figures dissolve into shimmering abstraction. The apparent sketch-like immediacy of her approach is underpinned, however, by a solid sense of draughtsmanship and a carefully orchestrated sense of colour.”
Surrey Life Magazine

Annemarie has continued painting animals and portraits in her unique and dramatic style. She is inspired by the English landscape, especially Surrey with its rivers and canals.

Now back for her first exhibition of new work since 2012, please come and see the latest work by this rare talent.

Loving Vincent – The Remarkable Hand Painted Film About Vincent Van Gogh

Loving Vincent – The Remarkable Hand Painted Film About Vincent Van Gogh

This video is fascinating. A presentation by Director/ producer Hugh Welchman, describing the behind the scenes production process of the world’s first most eagerly awaited hand painted, animated, feature film. Drawn in the style of artist Vincent Van Gogh.

“A long and arduous labor of love by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, the film turns van Gogh’s work into an unusual kind of biopic. Using tens of thousands of oil paintings commissioned from scores of artists, the filmmakers transform famous works of modern art into a hypnotic and beguiling cartoon.” – The Times
