John began in the 1970’s by selling his paintings of local scenes from the railings of the Bayswater Road in London. Most of these early works are now scattered around the world, from the Americas to Japan. In the 1980’s he worked at a much larger scale as a scenic artist, painting huge canvases and backdrops for live theatre.
Since 1990, John has specialised in painting architectural subjects, in oils, watercolour and acrylics. His success has been built on a sense of enjoyment and light in all his pictures and a thorough understanding of his subjects and his technique.
The demand for his work today, means that most of his time is filled with commissions for paintings and illustrations.
His clients include: The Royal Bank of Scotland, The University of Cambridge, Historic Royal Palaces, Rolex Watch Co., Holmes Place, Land Securities, J Walter Thompson, McCann Erickson, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Berkeley Homes, Hammerson, Costain, Barratt, Building Design Partnership, Sheppard Robson, Chapman Taylor Partnership, Opera North and The Oxford University Press.
He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show and has recently completed a commission to produce the painting for the 2009 “Oxford Almanack” – an annual publication of the Oxford University Press. Previously commissioned artists include JMW Turner, John Piper, David Gentleman and Sir Hugh Casson.
John lives in Thames Ditton, Surrey with his family and works from his studio in Kingston Upon Thames. When he’s not painting, he likes playing blues guitar, and/or drinking beer in the sun.
Portraits of buildings, from private houses to modern office developments, can be commissioned in all sizes, from small watercolours to very large oil paintings. They can reflect pride in a new development, or affection for an old building.
The colours and design are inspirational, but the whole process is governed by a respect for the craft of painting. The finished paintings evoke the very specific atmosphere of each place, in the nature of a true portrait.
John Walsom wants his pictures to have a positive impact.
“I’ve always tried to paint pictures that people will want to look at for a long time, without getting bored. People are proud of their buildings. They love the way they look at certain times of day, in a certain season, and a reminder of that moment makes them happy. It’s all about capturing a moment in the life of a place.”

Sam Beare Hospice was the choice of charity where one of my paintings, “The Thames: Towards Weybridge” inspired by a walk along the towpath in spring, was auctioned at the annual Sam Beare Hospice Ball at Mercedes Benz World, Brooklands, Weybridge, Surrey.

I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, graduating from Rhodes University with a BA degree in Fine Art (Painting) in 1990, having been fortunate enough to study under George Coutouvidis. In 1995, we moved to England, and after many years in formal employment, I resumed painting full-time.
I paint a wide range of subjects, enjoying landscapes the most. Drawing inspiration from nature, I am especially interested in the influence of light. Capturing mood and atmosphere through establishing a sense of place; use of tone, colour, texture and line, elements intrinsic to painting, are what I strive to achieve in my work. Primarily using oils on canvas, I enjoy working in other mediums as well.
The English Romantic painters Constable and Turner, as well as the French Impressionists, Monet and Pissarro, are key influences in my work.
I welcome commissions and would be delighted to discuss the details of your requirements.
All of the paintings on my website are original works. Some of my work is reproduced in the form of giclée prints which can be obtained by contacting me by email.
Jane is a full, exhibiting member of the Guildford Art Society.
Former member of the Molesey Art Society and the Sunningdale Art Society.
On resuming painting in 2011, I started building up a portfolio and had a solo exhibition followed by a number of shared exhibitions in 2013. Since then, I have relied on word of mouth and the internet to sell my work.
Solo Exhibition: Feb, March 2013 Robert Phillips Gallery, Riverhouse Barn, Walton-on-Thames Surrey
Guildford Art Society Spring Exhibition: May 2013 at St Mary’s Church, Quarry Street, Guildford, Surrey
Guildford Art Society Autumn Exhibition: October, November 2013 at Guildford House, Guildford, Surrey

I have been painting in watercolour now for about twenty years. Most of what I have learned has been through observation and tuition at workshops, and through art clubs. I live now in St. Johns Village, not far from the Basingstoke canal, which in itself is an inspiration, offering up endless subjects changing throughout the year.
This gallery is a showcase of some of my watercolour paintings. For a full set see my website. Some of them are recent, and some are not so, but just retained because I like them. Some of them were sold long ago, others are still available. Waterways are a constant favourite, either local or from my travels. There is nothing quite like watercolour for depicting water, however, the gallery does show quite a mix of subjects and as you can see, elephants have fascinated me for some time.
Watercolour is my chosen medium. It can be infuriating, but rewarding when successful. I have come a long way with it, but there is always more to do, so am unlikely to change to another medium. Occasionally I add some ink for a particular effect, otherwise I depend on the purity of watercolour.
Painting is for me a pleasure, and exhibiting is part of the experience. I usually exhibit locally four or five times a year, with regular venues in Guildford and Pirbright.
Sales enquiries are are gladly received. I don't as yet produce prints, maybe I will one day, but so far have only sold originals. I have sent pictures all over the globe, and can go into detail if you want to enquire about any particular painting. At the time of writing this, the paintings which I have sold are widely distributed not only across the UK, but also hang in collections in France, Eire, Spain, Italy, Greece, Holland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
I am always very pleased to receive commissions.
