Contemporary Modern Art by Surrey Artist Mital Patel - What Do You See

What Do You See?

As humans, our senses form the basis of our reality. The visual sense particularly allows us to construct the world we believe we see. This art hopes to drive awareness that we can all see different things while looking at the same art. Lots of detail is placed in this hand-drawn art, allowing the viewer to see more detail over time. The deeper aspect allows when viewing the artwork to pause thoughts from past and future and be present looking only at the art. The question “what do you see” has basis in Buddhist philosophy, that our true selves are found in the space between our thoughts. Maybe this can be glimpsed if we are fully present in the moment when looking at the ink colours and micro characters hidden in the art.

About The Artist

"A self-taught, self-inspired and self-motivated artist who loves seeing images in my mind materialise on a blank sheet of paper. Detail, colour, vibrancy and emotion play a large part in my unique art as well as many world philosophies.

Being human and everything that comes with this, is portrayed in the art and due to the detail, can take many hundreds of hours to complete, typically over many months or a year or more.

As a working Optometrist, I am also very much interested and aware of how eye diseases impact life and the viewer's ability to see art. I can truly vouch that the visual sense is a true blessing and like all things, there is no guarantee it will always be there.

This is also something that inspires me to draw, as good sight, stable hands, good mobility and independence are to be celebrated today, as they cannot be guaranteed in the future.

My art cannot just be glanced at, rather to be viewed and studied with patience, then more and more will be revealed."

The Shape in My Dream

In October 2021 I had a dream. In that dream appeared a shape. The next day I drew the shape.

Since then, I have been working on this art which is the first drawing I have done in 10 years.
The concept is about re-awakening. What was once dormant needs to be released. The quote reflecting this is,
” The purpose of human life is not to be happy. The purpose of human life is to awaken to who we truly are”.
This will be the first in a new series of artworks over the coming years.

In painting, Impasto (Italian for dough) describes highly textured areas of the surface of a painting which are heavily built up with paint layers. Palette knife marks are clearly in evidence. I used very bold and heavy abstract paint so each colour really lifts off the canvas giving a 3D effect that is lovely to touch as well as to view.

Why not add floral artwork to your home or office. It’s also the perfect gift for your loved ones, relatives, and friends. I never paint the same painting twice, so you will have a one-of-a-kind original painting.

About The Artist

A little about me and how and why I paint.

When I see a canvas, I never get artist's block, I see my next great adventure starting. I'm on a journey without a plan that is constantly evolving. Each brush or palette knife stroke turns into something wonderful that eventually turns into a painting. That Is true art to me, rather than planning every step of the way, but who am I to say?

I am new to painting compared to many other artists and totally self-taught. I never studied at art school and have no art qualifications, but does that make my art unworthy? Can I even call myself an artist? I guess we all have to start somewhere but at least I'm honest enough to admit it and still place great love and passion into every painting I paint.

I have used every painting medium available but found my true love in acrylics. I started painting all sorts of things including trees, waterfalls, fields, sunsets etc. until my wife asked me to paint her a flower painting.
"Paint flowers!" I said, but I gave it a go, and surprisingly my wife was pleased. Since then, I have developed a unique way of painting flowers which I absolutely love. I mix my own heavy-bodied abstract paint and paint Impasto-style impressionist flowers.

After selling my art at various fairs and shows around the UK, I have decided it's now time to build a website to display it in a much easier fashion. I truly hope my paintings bring you as much pleasure as they did for me painting them.

I will post free within the UK. If you live outside the UK and wish to purchase my art, please contact me and I will be happy to find out shipping costs for you.

Sculpture - Making Waves - Jesmonite, fibre glass, jesmonite pigments and twine Sculpture - Woking Sculptor and Artist Sally de Courcy

Making Waves

The work was based on an antique Chinese vase from a museum archive. The vase was red and gold and had a fish detail in the glaze. The sculpture reflects the fish detail by simulating the sinusoidal motion of a fish through water.

The neck of the vase represents the fin of a fish oscillating in a different plane to its body. The bulb of the vase was reminiscent of antique glass buoys. The string is used as a play on this nautical theme representing the rope that links the buoys together. These were traditionally used to float fishing nets to catch fish in the same way that the fish detail was captured in the original vase. The colours are based on goldfish in the artist’s garden pond.

About The Artist

My work aims at challenging our perception of ourselves, our fragility and strength.

My sculptures evolve by manipulating multiple cast objects so that the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Using repetition as emphasis, the outcome has a decorative geometry and kinetic unity that expresses are shared human experiences and conditions.

Bones are emblematic in much of my work, and the contextually linked objects reveal a narrative. Although frequently ornate, my sculptures hide darker and often sinister subjects that when revealed create dissonance. The sum like an optical puzzle, oscillates between beauty and nightmare.

My work is not autobiographical in the figurative sense, but like many artists, explores the liminal space between conscious representation and unconscious influence.

Recently my work has looked at the humanitarian aspects of the COVID19 pandemic and the current crisis of refugees crossing the English Channel.
