About The Artist

David has done a little painting for many years, but it is only in his recent retirement that he has begun to take it more seriously.

David worked professionally as a cinematographer, and was employed for thirty years at the BBC Television Film Unit. It is the skills learnt in his profession, of composition, perspective, lighting and colour that he endeavours to bring to his paintings.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, photography plays a large part in the inspiration for his paintings and he works entirely from his own photographs.
He can be inspired by almost any subject, but a lifelong love of the sea results in a strong bias towards maritime subjects.

David’s preferred medium is water soluble oils on prepared board.

About The Artist

I studied fine art for four years at Manchester and Sunderland Colleges of Art, followed by one year at Leeds College of Art ( art teachers' diploma ).
Subseqently, I spent many years teaching Art to A Level in grammar and independent schools, before taking early retirement.

My work is extremely varied, mainly in oils and acrylic, ranging from purely figurative to totally abstract. I tend to work in series, developing an idea, where one painting leads to another, before perhaps moving on to something quite different.

Over the years, I have exhibited in Newcastle on Tyne, Oxford, as well as various venues in Surrey and the paintings shown here represent only a SMALL cross-section of my work.

Not currently a member of a Surrey Art Group or Surrey Art Society.

I welcome any enquiries and will happily e-mail a wide range of images of my work, to any interested party.

About The Artist

John Walsom is a Surrey artist who’s renowned for his paintings of architectural subjects. He has illustrated the buildings of some of the best-known companies and people in the world. He is represented in London by Burlington Paintings of Burlington Gardens, Mayfair.

John began in the 1970’s by selling his paintings of local scenes from the railings of the Bayswater Road in London. Most of these early works are now scattered around the world, from the Americas to Japan. In the 1980’s he worked at a much larger scale as a scenic artist, painting huge canvases and backdrops for live theatre.

Since 1990, John has specialised in painting architectural subjects, in oils, watercolour and acrylics. His success has been built on a sense of enjoyment and light in all his pictures and a thorough understanding of his subjects and his technique.

The demand for his work today, means that most of his time is filled with commissions for paintings and illustrations.

John has produced pictures for banks and property developers, magazines, advertising agencies, architects and designers.

His clients include: The Royal Bank of Scotland, The University of Cambridge, Historic Royal Palaces, Rolex Watch Co., Holmes Place, Land Securities, J Walter Thompson, McCann Erickson, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Berkeley Homes, Hammerson, Costain, Barratt, Building Design Partnership, Sheppard Robson, Chapman Taylor Partnership, Opera North and The Oxford University Press.

He has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show and has recently completed a commission to produce the painting for the 2009 “Oxford Almanack” – an annual publication of the Oxford University Press. Previously commissioned artists include JMW Turner, John Piper, David Gentleman and Sir Hugh Casson.

John lives in Thames Ditton, Surrey with his family and works from his studio in Kingston Upon Thames. When he’s not painting, he likes playing blues guitar, and/or drinking beer in the sun.

Architectural Portraits

Portraits of buildings, from private houses to modern office developments, can be commissioned in all sizes, from small watercolours to very large oil paintings. They can reflect pride in a new development, or affection for an old building.

The colours and design are inspirational, but the whole process is governed by a respect for the craft of painting. The finished paintings evoke the very specific atmosphere of each place, in the nature of a true portrait.

John Walsom wants his pictures to have a positive impact.

“I’ve always tried to paint pictures that people will want to look at for a long time, without getting bored. People are proud of their buildings. They love the way they look at certain times of day, in a certain season, and a reminder of that moment makes them happy. It’s all about capturing a moment in the life of a place.”

From Jane’s ‘London By Night’ Gallery
Painting inspired by Francis Sandwith’s photograph
As a student , I was inspired by Francis Sandwith’s atmospheric “London by Night- A Century of Photographs” (published by Chatto & Windus) taken in the early 1900s. I was struck by Sandwith’s dramatic black and white photographs depicting London in a bygone age. I remain fascinated by the use of black and white and have since begun my own collection of sketches and photographs of London.

About The Artist

I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, graduating from Rhodes University with a BA degree in Fine Art (Painting) in 1990, having been fortunate enough to study under George Coutouvidis. In 1995, we moved to England, and after many years in formal employment, I resumed painting full-time.

I paint a wide range of subjects, enjoying landscapes the most. Drawing inspiration from nature, I am especially interested in the influence of light. Capturing mood and atmosphere through establishing a sense of place; use of tone, colour, texture and line, elements intrinsic to painting, are what I strive to achieve in my work. Primarily using oils on canvas, I enjoy working in other mediums as well.

The English Romantic painters Constable and Turner, as well as the French Impressionists, Monet and Pissarro, are key influences in my work.

jane atherfold surrey artist
For the last few years, I have been working on a series of South African landscapes and coastal scenes; British landscapes; Italian scenes of Venice and Tuscany; French landscapes and rural villages in the Dordogne region; as well as “London by Night”, a series of black and white paintings based on the evocative photos of London in 1920-1930s, taken by Francis Sandwith.

I welcome commissions and would be delighted to discuss the details of your requirements.

Original Art & Fine Art Giclée Prints
