About The Artist

Mark is a self-taught artist, and began painting in 1992 after attending classes by Alan Hume, a Staines artist whose draughtsman skills in watercolour and Pastel inspired Mark to start painting in watercolour.

Subsequently, Mark joined the Sunbury Art Group for a few years, but due to business commitments, discontinued painting until some 15 years later. In 2007 he joined the Littleton Artists Group, where he learnt to paint in oils under the tutelage of professional artist John Green.

Mark has exhibited at the Chertsey Gallery and exhibited at the Bank Gallery, Chobham in July 2010.

About The Artist

Ali Cockrean exhibits nationally and her work appears in collections in Europe and Canada. Born in 1962, Ali became an artist at the age of 15, when she began exhibiting and selling work. While she is largely self-taught, Ali’s art education includes formal tuition, most recently at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design and Slade School of Fine Art.

“My inspiration to paint always comes directly from within. It is the emotion and mood that is generated by a specific event; visual or auditory experience that forms the essence of the work, rather than the event or experience itself. Painting ‘feelings’ is always a challenge. I firmly believe that in order to consistently produce fresh, innovative and exciting work, artists must constantly challenge their own boundaries and push themselves beyond their comfort zones to discover their true abilities and potential.”

Ali Cockrean - Surrey Artists - Three Shades
At the moment, my preoccupation is with exploring how colour, line and form influence our reactions to familiar places or objects. In particular, I am exploring how far it is possible to abstract an image, yet still retain the essence of the original in the mind’s eye. What happens when the form is constant, but the colours change from those we traditionally expect? How does this affect our mood or emotive response?

These themes are common to all my recent work.”

About The Artist

‘I aspire to create “Visible Feelings” that can be shared by those who care to pause and wonder. I call upon my life’s experiences to inspire me and I let the feeling emerge in my work. I have been amazed, and sometimes disturbed, by what I have learned about myself through my paintings. I am so much richer for knowing myself better.’
Alan Brain
Alan Brain Vapour-Trails

Alan Brain discovered painting about twelve years ago when he attended a water colouring class with some friends. It led to a change of direction that he has never regretted. Today, his unique style, combined with spiritual awareness, produces works of unusual vibrancy and colour. As a former pilot and constant flyer, the immensity of the heavens with its changing moods has fascinated Alan. It features in many of his paintings where he manages to capture the vastness and mysteriousness of space.
His early years in Japan may have enhanced his bold view of landscapes and skies and you can see in his work the influence of wonderful open spaces to be found in places such as Wales, Arizona, New Mexico and Africa, all of which Alan visits regularly. However, such harmony with nature cannot be taught, it is an intrinsic part of the artist that we are fortunate to glimpse.

Alan exhibits several times a year in and around his home in Chobham Surrey, England. His work has been accepted for several prestigious exhibitions in London, including the Guild of Aviation Artists and the Society of Marine Artists. Alan also applies his teaching skills (he was a Flying Instructor) and helps his fellow artists through his course called ‘Find You Own Painting Direction’ and by one to one tuition. He believes it is important to give something back to those less fortunate than ourselves and is a strong supporter of the Samaritans charity; a percentage from his painting sales are contributed to his local branch.
