About The Artist

Mark is a self-taught artist, and began painting in 1992 after attending classes by Alan Hume, a Staines artist whose draughtsman skills in watercolour and Pastel inspired Mark to start painting in watercolour.

Subsequently, Mark joined the Sunbury Art Group for a few years, but due to business commitments, discontinued painting until some 15 years later. In 2007 he joined the Littleton Artists Group, where he learnt to paint in oils under the tutelage of professional artist John Green.

Mark has exhibited at the Chertsey Gallery and exhibited at the Bank Gallery, Chobham in July 2010.

I love colour and I remember feeling excited when looking at all the flowers in full bloom. Ramster Gardens is a magical location, and has an enormous range of trees and plants. I used a large combination of warm colours for the foreground and cool colours for the background, to give an impression of distance.
The end result is very close to the actual scene.

About The Artist

I am a Fine Artist based near Hartley Wintney in Hampshire but I also spend a few months of the year in Marbella in Spain where I paint on location.

I studied ‘visual communications’ and completed a foundation course in the late 1980’s – gaining a distinction at the Cardiff Institute of Art & Design. I then worked in London as an Art Director for a number of leading agencies before deciding to concentrate on oil painting and pen and ink drawing. I have been classically trained and my style has been described as similar to that of the ‘Impressionists’.

My paintings and drawings are for sale and can be viewed on this Surrey Artists site and in the Gallery of my website. I am also available to undertake commissioned work.

About The Artist

Born in what was the British Protectorate of Aden in South Yemen in 1955. The love of painting, drawing and the beauty of the written word has dominated my life. My professional career began in corporate design leading to exhibition and interior design, culminating in my own design practice in the early eighties.

The spiritual aspect of humanity is a strong influence in my life, and as a result I entered the Benedictine monastery of Quarr Abbey for several years, where I was introduced to bookbinding and the restoration of books. Since leaving monasticism I have continued to develop fine painting, calligraphy and bookbinding.

The love of blending colour and texture in painting, the use of line in drawing, the beauty of the written word in calligraphy and the three dimensional aspect of bookbinding, bring together elements that compliment each other well.

The majority of my work is through commissions, supported by solo and joint exhibitions.

Varied Fine Art Painting & Drawing Categories

These include Architectural, Garden, Botanical, Portraiture and General - The selection on this site gives an indication of the varied work of the artist. More can be seen on his two websites (see the links above).

Reference for my work is either from life, photographs or a combination of both, whichever the occasion demands. Often many commissions are gifts and therefore a surprise, or maybe circumstances do not permit, so working with the subject matter is not all ways possible. In such cases a selection of images of the same subject is always a great help.

I use various media; oils, watercolour, pastel, acrylic, inks and pencil (monochrome). I enjoy texture in my work wherever possible along with detail and tend to be traditional in my approach. Commissions for some clients have been strongly impressionist and or using vivid colour allowing freedom in colour and form.
