Born in 1952, I come from a long line of artists and can trace my ancestry back to Richard Wilson, the well-known 18th century English “romantic” painter. I studied at the City of London Polytechnic and the Wimbledon School of Art before embarking on a career as freelance artist and illustrator.
In addition to book-jacket illustration, I have produced work for television, films and museums, and have painted murals for commercial companies, and more recently, as a Lecturer in Art and Design.
My first love, however, has always been landscape painting. Capturing the effects of lighting and atmosphere, enables me to turn simple objects into the magical, always with the intention to convey the very essence of the subject, rather than just merely state the obvious.
Work has been exhibited in various galleries in London and the South East.

I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, graduating from Rhodes University with a BA degree in Fine Art (Painting) in 1990, having been fortunate enough to study under George Coutouvidis. In 1995, we moved to England, and after many years in formal employment, I resumed painting full-time.
I paint a wide range of subjects, enjoying landscapes the most. Drawing inspiration from nature, I am especially interested in the influence of light. Capturing mood and atmosphere through establishing a sense of place; use of tone, colour, texture and line, elements intrinsic to painting, are what I strive to achieve in my work. Primarily using oils on canvas, I enjoy working in other mediums as well.
The English Romantic painters Constable and Turner, as well as the French Impressionists, Monet and Pissarro, are key influences in my work.
I welcome commissions and would be delighted to discuss the details of your requirements.
All of the paintings on my website are original works. Some of my work is reproduced in the form of giclée prints which can be obtained by contacting me by email.
Jane is a full, exhibiting member of the Guildford Art Society.
Former member of the Molesey Art Society and the Sunningdale Art Society.
On resuming painting in 2011, I started building up a portfolio and had a solo exhibition followed by a number of shared exhibitions in 2013. Since then, I have relied on word of mouth and the internet to sell my work.

Having embraced a figurative style for many years, post Covid Melanie has been experimenting with colour and semi-abstraction, moving towards a more suggestive approach, painting the feelings invoked by her surroundings. Walking and sketching in the landscape to soak up the atmosphere and observe the changing light, before returning to the Studio to capture the essence of the experience in paint.
Working mainly in oils, she is available for commissioned work, but specializes in landscapes and coastal views of locations personal to her clients rather than portrait work.
As a tutor, Melanie is a regular visitor to Art Groups around the South East giving demonstrations, running workshops and hosting painting holidays for individuals. She has written four art instruction books for Collins. Melanie developed her own range of artist brushes. Details of courses can be found by visiting her website: melaniecambridge-fine-art.co.uk where you can visit her online shop.

I can be booked to deliver various demonstrations and workshops. All are available on-line or in person. Here is a selection of what I can offer. However, do please contact me to discuss your ideas and if I can create a bespoke event for your society, I will.
Big Skies over the North Downs - Oils: Let me show you hove to capture skies and clouds on a big scale. Working fast and loose to create a lively painting and incorporating impasto medium for the foreground downland.
Seascapes - Oils: I love painting seascapes and beaches. Working from sketches and photographs to create an atmospheric beach scene under a large open sky, incorporating figures or boats to give a sense of scale and interest.
How to Paint Horses - Gouache, Oils or Oil Pastels: I painted horses as a child, not being very good at riding them! In this demonstration I show how to get the proportions right for both a head and whole horse before moving on to paint a horse head portrait or a whole one in a simple landscape during the second half of the demonstration.
Interpreting Photographs - Gouache, Oils, Mixed Media or Oil Pastels: Many of us paint from photographs. During this demonstration I show you how to use several images to create a planning sketch. Using this sketch with the supporting images to then create a finished painting. If you wish, I am happy to use photographs supplied by the group, unseen by me in advance.
Use those Sketches! - Gouache, Oils, Mixed Media: Taking ideas from my sketchbook, sometimes combining more than one, to paint a landscape, woodland view, river scene, boats in the estuary, or indeed anything else from my sketchbook.
For all enquiries about demonstrations or workshops, please email me or call me (contact details above).

"Last nights demo was absolutely marvelous. I have had lots of feedback from members to the same effect. It has inspired quite a few of us. I also have had messages from some who could not attend the live meeting and they are pleased that a video will be coming out for them to view. A couple of them had already heard how good it was. How great is that? Thank you once again."
Charnwood Drawing & Painting Club
"Thank you so much for the fine demonstration you gave last evening. We all loved it, and I am sure the demo and the video will convince many of our ardent watercolourists to try oils in the future. In the meantime it was a 'win-win' for all of us."
Downland Art Society, Sussex
"Thank you so much for yesterday it was great and all the feedback received was very encouraging, people love to have their demos at home as they are stuck at home some even professed to prefer it!"
Harpenden Art Club
"Thank you so much for the excellent demonstration you gave for HAC. I think you could tell, from the silence, that everybody was totally absorbed in watching and learning new techniques! It was interesting to see the way you used gouache, the artist's putty and the oil pastels, and to hear your commentary on how you were achieving the effects you wanted."

Hildegarde was born on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, Northern Cape Province, South Africa.
She studied Social Science at the University of the Orange Free State, but has always been passionately involved in painting. She came to the UK in the “Sixties”, is married with two children, and lives in Surrey where she teaches and paints in her Studio in Molesey.
Hildegarde is primarily a “Colourist”. Her work is much influenced by her roots and she brings warmth and vibrancy into her paintings where with gay abandon uses colour and paint in a way that has been described as, “delightfully sensual”. Whether tackling cluttered Still Lifes of everyday objects, or landscapes of Southern Africa and Europe, she delights in depicting the effects of light and dark. The “Impressionists” and “Scottish Colourists” have had a major influence on her work. Although mainly an oil painter, Hildegarde also uses watercolour and mixed media.
Of Painting as an activity, she says “No matter how demanding painting can sometimes be, it always fills me with a huge sense of satisfaction and joy. In painting I escape into a World of my own, where I can revel in creating images with colour, shape and form.”
Hildegarde has sold to clients world-wide. Her paintings are represented by Art Galleries in South Africa and London. Her work is regularly exhibited with the Chelsea Art Society, and has been represented at the Affordable Art, and Battersea Art Fairs . In September 2007 she was Guest Artist for “The Family Law in Partnership”, Bedford Chambers, Covent Garden, London, and exhibited in May 2008 hanging at the Royal British Artists Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London. One of her works, “Daffodils” was recently auctioned at the Royal Academy on behalf of Marie Curie Cancer Research.
Hildegarde undertakes commissions for Still Lifes incorporating client’s colour schemes and precious possessions as well as painting private homes and gardens.
Hildegarde is a member of Molesey Art Society, Chelsea Art Society, Sunbury on Thames Art Society & Thames Valley Art Society and Weybridge Art Society.
