About The Artist

Christiane was born in East Berlin, where she was a self-taught documentary photographer. Moving to London in the early 90’s, she achieved a first class honours degree in photography at the University of Westminster

Since leaving college, Christiane won the London Photographic Award in 1998 and the third prize in the BJP/ Portrait Award.

Her recent work (Basingstoke Canal, Amsterdam) shows how strongly she is drawn to and influenced by the constantly changing patterns and visual effects of water and its surroundings.

Christiane has exhibited at Association Gallery (1998), “Well Hung” Gallery in London (1999) and Dostoyevsky Museum St. Petersburg (1999).

Since 1999, Christiane has regularly participated in Art fairs in London (Paperleaf Art Fair, London Contemporary Photography Fair, Affordable Art Fair, Battersea Art Fair) and has an annual solo show in Soho.

A Perfect Line

‘This painting was completed for coursework, when I studied Illustration for a year at Kingston University in Surrey, UK. It was to illustrate a scene from Dylan Thomas’ ‘Under Milk Wood’. My Granddad posed as the vicar who has just thought of such a brilliant line in his poetry that he doesn’t look where he is dipping his pen.’

Born in 1985, Will Rochfort grew up in Lymington on the south coast of England and, apart from his time studying Illustration and Fine Art at Kingston University, he has lived there all his life. Since graduating in 2008 his focus has been primarily oil painting.

Will’s main reason for becoming an artist is from a passion for creativity.

“There is rarely any strong meaning or message behind my work – narrative takes a large role because I like the work to be emotive through what is being portrayed, but creativity is the driving force behind all of my paintings”

From 2008 to 2010 Will Rochfort worked as an Official Artist for the 2012 London Olympics, working with Olympic Gold Medalists, producing paintings in support of the Games and its associated charities.

As well as completing several portrait commissions, Will Rochfort is always searching for new ideas for paintings and usually finds this in books or cinema. With influences ranging from Degas to Rockwell, to the films of Steven Spielberg, it is narrative that really interests Will and he always aims to have a story within his work.

“I am a very visual painter and with the public being my target audience over the art establishment, I always aim to depict scenes that, through the characters portrayed, I hope people can relate to and enjoy”

Ice Cold Under the Skin

‘I love Film Noir movies. This painting is completely character-driven and the narrative is so strong that it couldn’t survive without it, but I don’t mind that because the characters are so strong. All thanks go to my friends, who posed once again and put their all into it. The painting was a lot of fun and developed itself as it went along.

I got three quarters of the way through another version of this painting (all in black and white), before abandoning it and starting again, because the composition wasn’t working. The new design progressed so much better that I didn’t have to work very hard at all.’

‘I take a lot of inspiration from American Cinema and love the poster work of Drew Struzan, who inspired me to try my own. Instead of just presenting the poster on the canvas, I wanted to make it a little more interesting and the juxtaposition of the tidy illustrative poster on one side with the quite modernist, open space on the other, seemed to work really well. The result has an essence of loneliness that I really like.’
