About The Artist

I have been an artist most of my life. I was trained at Bournemouth College of Art and Design and have since developed a keen eye for detail and use of colour.

My work has covered a wide range of subjects and styles, including landscape, marine, architectural, portraiture and fantasy, using watercolour, acrylic, gouache, or mixed media.  Variety has been an essential part of my work, with equal opportunities for a disciplined study or a creative self-expression.

I now work mainly on art commissions using watercolour or acrylic and would be happy to discuss your specific requirements.

I have exhibited at galleries in London (including the Mall Galleries and Westminster Gallery) and the provinces (including Royal West of England Academy) and received a number of art awards. I have also provided artwork for use in tourism literature, charitable and commercial Christmas cards and building society calendars.

My works have been purchased by art enthusiasts in the Netherlands, USA, France, Spain, Australia and throughout the United Kingdom.

About The Artist

John Hart Mills (1936-2019) grew up in London. On completing school, he entered the book trade, studying art part-time at London’s City and Guilds Art School, where his tutors included the sculptor Reg Butler. His interest in music led him to attend the London College of Music, where one of his composition teachers was William Lloyd Webber.

His job as an international sales representative never prevented him from following his twin interests of painting and composing. His interest in oil painting manifested itself early on, especially in portraiture. His marriage to a Norwegian saw him making frequent visits to Norway, where he painted a series of watercolours that featured the natural beauty of the hills, lakes and coastal inlets to be found around Sandefjord in south Norway.

John's watercolour paintings include landscapes closer to home, as well portraits and figures.
