About The Artist

I am a graphic designer and senior partner at FdK Design Consultants but I'm relatively new to the art world, so still have a bit of ‘imposter syndrome’ and shy away from calling myself an artist.

My mother is an architect and art and creativity were very much part of home life as a child, so perhaps it's not surprising that I knew I wanted to be working in the creative industries from an early age.

I was helped by going to a school with an outstanding art department that encouraged creativity and basic art skills and it seemed completely logical to go on to study graphic design at the University of the Creative Arts in Epsom.

I loved my time there - this was in the days prior to the Mac and as well as the principles of design and design thinking, there was a great deal of 'craft' skill to learn; including drawing and painting, typesetting, artwork creation and much more.

Once released into the real world, I worked in a local graphics studio in Guildford before setting up a design consultancy with a friend in 1989, just as the Macintosh computer and desktop publishing were arriving in the UK.

We were convinced that this would revolutionise the graphic design profession and were one of the first studios to set up completely equipped with Macs. The 30 years that followed have been a roller-coaster ride, with highs and lows aplenty and although now much smaller than in our heyday, we continue to produce commercial graphic and communication design for companies of all sizes.

However, over time, I have come to realise that in bringing undoubted efficiency to the design process, the Mac has also taken something away and it feels like we may have lost our connection with those 'craft' skills and too often creativity is being directed by the technology, rather than by the designer.

With that in mind, I decided that I wanted to go back to my roots and have an outlet for my own creativity; something that would allow me to design and create pieces for my personal satisfaction, using both digital and traditional tools.

Currently I work primarily in ink and watercolour, but I'm also experimenting with digital art, linocut and acrylic painting, so my full portfolio is very varied, whilst I work towards finding my own style.

About The Artist

The roots of my creativity are in Africa. The people, the vegetation and multifaceted landscapes of Zimbabwe were to me vividly bright and beautiful.

I moved to the UK in 2003, with one year away (2003-2004), accepting a visiting student opportunity in Jerusalem, Israel. I was based in Wimbledon up until 2009 and then moved to Surrey and now live in Kent. I have relished the cultural richness that is here and the beauty of the English countryside.

I look back at my mentors with gratitude. Beginning at primary boarding school, I remember with thanks the artist and teacher, Jean Peterson, who started an art club. My very first exhibition entry was done through her. From then on I thought of myself as an artist.

Estelle Byrne was my inspiring and gifted art teacher at secondary school. I notice on the Queen Elizabeth School Facebook page, she is often mentioned with affection. Her classes were the highlight of my week.

I mostly work in acrylic and watercolour. When I work from nature I prefer close up views, making the play of light the main ingredient. I am aware that I am drawing inspiration from my own story behind the subject, the ongoing script of everything observed.

I love the human form and face. I look for subtle expressions that reveal personality, the story behind the eyes.

Awards / Exhibitions / Career

I studied at the School of Art at the Bulawayo Technical College. Under Adele Walters I discovered and developed my strength in life drawing and received the college’s Fine Art Award (1969). That same year, a class outing to the park to paint outdoors initiated my love for watercolours.

I went on to a long career in Harare, mostly within the textile industry. I took on painting commissions, sold my work through commissions, solo and joint exhibitions and in small local galleries. It’s a lovely thought that my work is all over the world in people’s homes.

In Zimbabwe I worked only in watercolour, and my subjects were predominately floral and landscape (see Bush Sunrise). Here in the UK, I have taken on private commissions and I have sold work at the Corner Gallery, Carlshalton (see Hydrangea Profusion) and through the studio of Jane Silk, the ceramicist (see Ornamental Orange Tree and Higginson Park).

I am exhibiting at Sixteen Gallery, Cheltenham in March 2022.

I’ve had exciting experiences as a mature student. I lived in Sweden for four years to study (BA European History) and during that time took 3 courses in Western Humanities under Dr. Torbjorn Aaronson, PhD Political Science, Uppsala (2002). As a visiting student for one year, I studied Jewish Art in Late Antiquity at the Hebrew University, Rothberg School, under Professor Lee I. Levine (2003-2004). I now live in Kent.

Sally Anne Wake Jones - New Haw, Weybridge Artist Landscape Painting En Plein Air

My recent acrylic paintings tell stories inspired by my dog walks. I love to connect with nature. I immerse myself in the fabric of a place - the changing seasons, the cloud formations, the cycle of life and decay - keeping a visual notebook. I set out to capture these impressions, painting large spontaneous statements.

Where possible, I like to work on canvases, en plein air and with my husband, Peter, we have created a unique collection of paintings, portraying the historic parkland of Windsor Great Park, in varying moods throughout the seasons.

We frequently visit the South of France and the intense light of that region has influenced my bold use of colour and the scintillating light effects seen in my work.

About The Artist

Paintings for bringing calm, peace, and taking people to their happy place.

Larisa is a self-taught artist from Shere in Surrey. She has found painting connects her to a state of flow. Connections between artist and nature, artist and paint, artist and form, artist and viewer.

Her art is inspired by skies and nature. Views that can be lost in, to uplift and be carried away. She also loves still life with flowers. Flowers are given as a thank you, to say you are loved, for difficult times. Larisa paints them as she loves having flowers in her house; they bring beautiful scent as well as bringing joy. She sees that her paintings represent these connections, given as a thank you, to lift people, to bring people to their happy place. She currently paints with acrylic on board / canvas or paper.
