I am an artist based in Chobham, Surrey. My artwork ranges in a variety of media, from oil painting to tempera, watercolours, acrylics and mixed media.
It is mainly figurative, though some of my pieces can be abstractions of figurative forms. I work on objects, single items or still life and landscapes.
I do not mimic reality and look for a personal vision of shapes and colours sometimes disregarding proportions. Impressionistic views merge with a surrealist vision in my work and a poetic interpretation of reality, sketching and drawing, are always my first steps towards a finished work. Then I choose the media that
best suits the composition. Sometimes I try different media for the same subject, to see which one interprets the form and thought I mean to convey.
The picture needs to speak to the viewer, communicating multiple sensations and engaging them in the story. Then I choose the media that best suits the composition.
I am also a writer and my inspiration, both in writing and in painting comes from where I live, what I do and the people I meet. It can be a view of the English landscape, flowers on a wall, working in my back garden, or an encounter. I am also very much inspired by travels, the changing of seasons, exhibitions and memories.
I think most of my work is a revisitation of memories of what I saw and experienced in the recent or distant past.
I am a member of Woking Art Society and take part in the workshops and exhibitions they organise. I have also just subscribed to
Surrey Artists Open Studios and am a member of Chobham Art Group.
This is the award-winning Still Life – “Best Professional Still Life Artist of the year 2020.
“I was amazed to win this coveted award, since I painted this in about half an hour as a demonstration for a class that I ran in Dorking. They also exhibited 4 other still life works of mine.” It also won Bronze Medal at the ArtisTTable USA Exhibition in c.1994. It is a watercolour study of fruits with a striped apron and can be viewed at the Artist’s studio

For most of my life I lived in Surrey. I loved painting from a young age (see oil painting, aged 8 below).
I studied at Croydon College of Art from1960-63 and then worked as a graphic designer until 2007, giving one day a week to teaching in Colleges of Art; Hull, Norwich, Epsom, Croydon and Reigate.
I taught drawing and painting to adults at Ruxley Lane, Epsom and also practiced as a portrait photographer. In 2009, I concentrated on fine art, photography and teaching.
I was a member of the Dorking Art Group and I also still tutor a group in Caterham, where I was born. Now I have moved to Biggin Hill in Kent, just a few yards from Tatsfield.
I paint landscape, portrait, still life; telling a story or expressing an emotion, emphasising light, tone and colour.
I work in a varied style, but mostly "post-impresssionist", or "academic" rendering.
I work both in my studio or 'en plein air'.
Some are born with a natural talent, (for instance Picasso could draw beautifully at age 7); that applies in all walks of life. However, drawing and painting is often not well taught! My structured methods can bring out the best in any budding artist.
Examples of portraits are included in my portfolio on this Surrey Artists website. If you are interested in having a portrait painted, please contact me with your commission enquiry.

I have also taught Life Drawing and Basic Design part-time in various colleges of Further Education, mainly to Architecture and Interior Design students.
My paintings are based on Realism, Observation and Recording. It might be a particular event or a sequence of events, a time of the year, an unusual happening or just something I think is beautiful or interesting. I want to show ordinary scenes in a compelling way; I want to draw the attention to what are quite often everyday occurrences.
I paint in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolour and also take the occasional sculptural commission.

After qualifying as an Adult Education tutor in 1979, Liz followed a successful career teaching weekly classes in drawing, watercolours, and mixed media for Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire County Councils from which she retired in 2003.
Liz now concentrates on a busy schedule, demonstrating to Art Societies throughout the country and teaching residential courses at Dedham Hall near Colchester, Essex, Earnley Concourse in Sussex, and other centres.
She has also contributed to several books including ‘The Artists’ Sketchbook’ and ‘Watercolour Plus’ and writes regular articles for ‘The Artist’ magazine. In addition, Liz is a well-known authority on artists’ materials and has demonstrated for most of the major manufacturers.
In London, she exhibits regularly at Mall Galleries with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and The Society of Women Artists to which she gained elected membership in 1993. In addition, she is a full member of the Society of Floral Painters with whom she exhibits twice a year. An active and committed member of many local Art Societies, she has recently been elected President of the Arun Art Society.
Liz has a widespread reputation for still life and floral and landscape paintings (many of which have been regularly reproduced as greetings cards and prints by major companies). Her main inspirations are light, colour and the heathland landscape around her home in Lightwater, Surrey.
