About The Artist

“I have concentrated on the portrait, as for me, the face is an endlessly interesting subject to paint, and one to which we can all relate.

I work from photographs, as they provide an accurate foundation upon which the painting can develop, whilst still keeping the subtlety of a moment’s expression. Most of my portraits are Acrylic on Canvas or Board but I also use Pastel and Conte on Tinted Paper.

For a further selection of my work and details on prices and ordering, please visit my website.”

Happy Mum with Commission of Milo

‘Thanks for the portrait of our lovely boy Milo! It’s one thing to capture the facial elements of a person accurately, it’s another to portray something of the metaphysical/spirit of the subject. You do both… in spades. Thank you so much for investing so much care and intelligence into every stroke. We love it!’

Artist Biography

“Drawing and painting have been important to me since childhood. My best presents were cartridge pads, tins of crayons and paintboxes. The simple pleasure of making ‘pictures’ was so much more fun than maths homework or Evensong choir practice with all those psalms; but then, what isn’t?

At school I had a wonderful art teacher, Pat Adams, who encouraged me to explore different media and study painters past and present. So a new world opened up and with it, dreams of being an artist. I took a Foundation Course in Art and Design in Epsom and then started a Fine Art Degree in Bristol. I continued to paint during my spare time from work and gradually concentrated on portraiture.

The human face and form crosses all boundaries and is therefore the most familiar and accessible of subjects. I had painted family and friends from life over the years, but once I started working from photos, my confidence grew. To start with this made me uneasy, until I found that painters – Sickert, for example, had used photos as a starting point. From those early efforts I began to get commissions from family, friends and then by word of mouth. I look to the portraits by artists such as Degas, Sargent and Freud to help me with ideas about brushwork, composition and colour.”

About The Artist

Mark is a self-taught artist, and began painting in 1992 after attending classes by Alan Hume, a Staines artist whose draughtsman skills in watercolour and Pastel inspired Mark to start painting in watercolour.

Subsequently, Mark joined the Sunbury Art Group for a few years, but due to business commitments, discontinued painting until some 15 years later. In 2007 he joined the Littleton Artists Group, where he learnt to paint in oils under the tutelage of professional artist John Green.

Mark has exhibited at the Chertsey Gallery and exhibited at the Bank Gallery, Chobham in July 2010.

The Waiting Room

‘‘The Waiting Room’ was my first oil painting. It represents the relationship between father and son and a reminiscence of childhood, something that I feel and I’m only 21.

The models are father and son, Dave and Jack Gooderidge and to this day I think they got it just right. The subtle intimacy in their pose is a credit to the success of this painting.’

About The Artist

Born in 1985, Will Rochfort grew up in Lymington on the south coast of England and, apart from his time studying Illustration and Fine Art at Kingston University, he has lived there all his life. Since graduating in 2008 his focus has been primarily oil painting.

Will’s main reason for becoming an artist is from a passion for creativity.

“There is rarely any strong meaning or message behind my work – narrative takes a large role because I like the work to be emotive through what is being portrayed, but creativity is the driving force behind all of my paintings”

From 2008 to 2010 Will Rochfort worked as an Official Artist for the 2012 London Olympics, working with Olympic Gold Medalists, producing paintings in support of the Games and its associated charities.

As well as completing several portrait commissions, Will Rochfort is always searching for new ideas for paintings and usually finds this in books or cinema. With influences ranging from Degas to Rockwell, to the films of Steven Spielberg, it is narrative that really interests Will and he always aims to have a story within his work.

“I am a very visual painter and with the public being my target audience over the art establishment, I always aim to depict scenes that, through the characters portrayed, I hope people can relate to and enjoy”

Too Few Role Models

‘This was the easiest of paintings in that it worked from start to finish. I took influence from Bill Watterson’s brilliant ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ series, where two characters play ‘war’ and when they have both been shot, the game is over.’
